A process of getting the appropriate fabric for Sashiko project is always a fun, yet sometimes it is challenging. We often get inquiries what kind of fabric is the best for practicing Sashiko stitching. In this page, you can purchase the Indigo Dye Fabric (Cotton 100%) we regularly use for our Sashiko Jacket and Bags. We use this fabric for Sashiko Workshop as well.
【Update about the Fabric Color】
I had some inquiries about the fabric color. It is Dark Blue (Indigo Color), not Black. It is challenging for me to take good photos to show "Indigo Blue". We use only 1 kind of indigo fabric regularly, so most of the Indigo Fabric you see on the Youtube Live-streaming where I stitch is this fabric. The 2nd photo is a whole bolt, which is more dark Indigo. Also, I added a photo from a customer who had better lighting (It is too light in blue to my eyes on my screen).
I will work on the photos as well.
Check Youtube for the fabric color. I use the exact same fabric here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7Zno1NSRTw).
【Update on Covid-19 situation】
Due to the suspension of International Shipping from Japan to the U.S., the inventory is very limited. We have some sample (A) and (B). If you would like to purchase more than 24 inch, please contact us first. It may take a while to complete the shipment if we do not have enough fabric in stock. Thank you for your understanding. (The back order will help us to cover the expensive private carrier from Japan. Thank you for your support.)
Here is a check list for choosing good fabric for Sashiko
You should choose the fabric based on your project goal. Unlike the Sashiko thread (*1), we can use any kind of fabric based for Sashiko stitching. Here, on this website, we introduce one of the most common (yet very good quality) fabric. A combination of Indigo Dyed fabric and white thread is the traditional Sashiko stitching.
Width: 119 cm / 46.8 inch
The price of $39.00 for 24 inch length (for a rectangle of about 61 cm x 119cm).
If you order 2 of per 24 inch, then you will get the 48 inch of this fabric.
I added a sample of this fabric, the size of 12" x 11" ($9.80) and 25" x 11" ($16.80) for more reasonable pricing.
This fabric has a good thickness and softness for Sashiko stitching. We use this fabric to many our projects as well as for the workshops Atsushi provides. If you are a graduate of Sashiko Workshop / Online Sashiko Class, this is the fabric you used on learning Sashiko.
*1 - In order to enjoy the rhythm and wisdom of Sashiko, we strongly recommend in using the thread specifically designed for Sashiko.
*2 - This fabric is NOT Hon-Aizome (本藍染）as the authentic Japanese Natural Indigo Dye. If you would like to purchase one, please contact me. I can arrange the order. It is expensive for us to carry as the inventory.
The smaller size (As short as 6 inches) fabric is available here.
